Day in My Life as a Homebody

I used to think that staying at home is boring, but that changed after I started leaning into my introverted side and embracing life as a homebody. Instead of feeling restless, I began finding comfort in staying home and realised there are countless things I can enjoy without needing to go out.

More recently, I also transformed my room into a space that I genuinely enjoy spending time in. It is no longer just somewhere I sleep or crash on my bed. I wanted it to feel like my own little space where I could relax, do my hobbies, create content, and simply enjoy being there.

Being comfortable with staying home doesn’t mean I never want to go out. I still enjoy exploring food and going places, but I no longer feel like I need to be out all the time. Home has become a place where I can recharge, create, and enjoy my own company.

So here’s a day in my life and how I spend my day at home.

Getting Sufficient Sleep

My day at home usually starts around noon, after 9 to 10 hours of sleep. I’ve always known that I need at least 9 hours to feel fully rested, but for a long time I thought it was excessive and a waste of time. So I experimented with cutting back to 7 or 8 hours, but I always woke up groggy, struggled to get going, and felt drained throughout the day.

Now I no longer fight it. Instead, I embrace what my body needs, a full 9 hours of rest. I don’t always manage it perfectly every single night, but I no longer guilt myself or try to force less sleep.

Waking Up

I’ll usually be awake a little after 11, and I take my time easing into the day. I’ll linger in bed for a bit, then slowly get up to wash up, drink water and make my daily dose of coffee. That little ritual sets the tone for a calm start to my day.

Then I’ll get ready for the day. Even if I’m not going to go out at all, I still change out of my sleepwear and do my skincare. Getting ready isn’t necessarily about preparing to leave the house, it’s more about setting the tone for the day and helping me shift out of sleep mode. The shift reminds me that my bed is for resting, while the rest of my room is a space for me to live, relax, and enjoy my hobbies.

Lunch

After getting ready, it’s usually time for lunch. Sometimes I’ll prepare something simple at home if I have groceries stocked up, while other times I’ll order food delivery. Being dressed and ready for the day also gives me another option. I can decide to walk to a nearby food court or eatery for lunch.

I actually enjoy these short lunch outings because they give me a reason to get out of the house, get some movement, and enjoy a change of scenery without turning it into a full day outing. Since it’s just somewhere nearby, I’ll often be home within an hour.

I like that I can have a little time outside while still spending most of my day at home. Once I’m back or done with lunch, I’ll settle into my room and ease into the rest of my afternoon.

Mixed of Hobbies

The next part of my day is usually a mix of hobbies. Some have been with me for years, like adult colouring and word searches. Others are more recent, like junk journaling, discovered after I started embracing life as a homebody.

My newest hobby, is organising and tidying my room. For it to remain a space I genuinely enjoy spending time in, I need to keep it clean and tidy. Instead of treating cleaning and tidying as chores that I have to get through, I decided to treat them as a hobby.

There’s something surprisingly satisfying about putting things back where they belong, clearing a cluttered area, or making a small improvement to my space. It also feels good knowing that the effort I put into my room directly makes it a more comfortable and enjoyable place for me to spend my time.

Break Time

After spending some time on my hobbies, I’ll usually take a short break. It gives me a chance to slow down and pause for a while instead of constantly staying occupied with my hobbies.

This used to almost always be coffee time, as I would often reach for another cup of coffee in the late afternoon. These days, I’ve been trying to vary the drinks I have. Sometimes I’ll have a drink or a small snack, while other times I don’t feel like having anything at all. In that case, I’ll just sip on some water and sit in my chair for a while to decompress.

Chores or Hobbies

After my break, the rest of the afternoon can go in different directions. If there are household chores outside of my room that needs to be done, I’ll take some time to get them done. Otherwise, I’ll go back to my mix of hobbies and spend the rest of the afternoon doing whatever I feel like doing.

My afternoons can look quite different from day to day. Sometimes I’ll spend hours on one hobby, while other days I’ll jump between several different things depending on my mood.

Shower and Dinner

My evening usually begins with a refreshing shower. It’s more than just washing up. It feels like a reset, helping me feel fresh and calm as I transition into the evening and get ready to wind down for the night.

After my shower, I’ll have dinner, which is usually at home. If I have groceries stocked up, I might prepare something simple. On days when I don’t have much at home, I’ll keep things easy with something like bread or instant noodles. If I’ve gone out for lunch, I might pick up something that I can save and reheat for dinner. If I order food delivery for lunch, I sometimes order something for dinner at the same time, that can be saved and reheated.

Haircare and Essential Oil

After dinner, this is when my self care routine begins. I pay extra attention to my hair, giving it the care it needs and taking a little extra time to look after it. Once I’m done with my haircare, I’ll start diffusing essential oils. The gentle scent fills the room and instantly makes the space feel calmer and cozier.

Desk or Bed

With my haircare done and the diffuser going, I’ll usually ease back into my hobbies either at my desk or get cozy in bed with games or music. There’s something comforting about continuing with the things I enjoy while the calming scent lingers in the room. It’s a gentle way to spend the last part of my evening, doing whatever feels most enjoyable in the moment.

Brush Teeth, Supplement, and Skincare

Eventually, I’ll move on to the last things I do for the day before bed, which is the rest of my self care routine. I’ll brush my teeth, take my supplements, and go through my hand care routine.

So that is a typical day in my life as a homebody. All these little moments come together to create a routine that feels grounding, comfortable, and fulfilling. Staying at home doesn’t have to mean being bored or missing out on life. For me, it is a chance to slow down, enjoy my hobbies, take care of myself, and create a space that I genuinely enjoy spending time in.

Embracing this lifestyle has also helped me feel more balanced. Having the time and space to recharge leaves me feeling more refreshed and gives me more energy to enjoy the moments when I do go out. I’ve come to appreciate that I don’t have to choose between enjoying life at home and enjoying life outside. I can have both, the comfort and familiarity of home, along with the energy and clarity to make the most of my time outside.

Maybe that is what I love most about being a homebody. There is nothing particularly extraordinary about my days, but I have learnt to find meaning and comfort in the ordinary.
